Learning about Women Empowerment at the UN
posted by Kristen Dalton at 08:26am on 03/01/2010
Hey everyone,
I hope you all have had a delightful week. Mine has been nice, although I have been pretty sick so I have been trying to overcome that amidst auditions and events. I am feeling much better today so hopefully I'm all better now! I got to visit the UN this week by attending an International Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Conference where I met Rachel Ferguson, the Duchess of York and actress, Geena Davis. Geena was one of the panelists and gave the most eye-opening and intelligent speeches that day. She educated us about gender discrimination in the media and in the acting world, like children's shows that portray girls in a gender stereotypical way and have less prominence than boys. The statistics were alarming. I learned that genders are still stereotyped in TV and media without us even realizing it. The event as a whole was really incredible and there were a lot of extremely dynamic and passionate women and men there from all over the world working to eliminate violence and discrimination against women everywhere. I am hoping to form a partnership with the UN so I can help work with women's issues to empower women, an area where I can really see MUO and Miss USA being very influential.
I had another TV hosting audition this past Monday and had so much fun! The bad thing was that I was really sick that morning so I was praying I would be okay by the time I went in! I'm going to Vegas this weekend to help promote the show in May. It should be fun to be back!! Hopefully it will be warmer there than in NYC.
Have a splendid weekend!
Kristen
