Skin Tip of the Week: Summer Time Issues
posted by Cheryl Karcher, MD at 07:26am on 07/08/2009
Here's Dr. Karcher's skin care tip for this week!
This week, we answer a question regarding a favorite summer pastime-camping. A blogger asks ...
'My daughter and I spend a lot of time camping during the summer. What are some precautions we can take against nasty bug bites? How can we recognize a tick bite from a mosquito bite, and how can we avoid these?'
If you're going camping this time of year, it is really important to take your bug spray with you. Many diseases can be spread by mosquitoes, so make sure to layer on the bug spray when you are outdoors. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease and are prevalent in various wooded areas. If you are camping in areas that breed deer ticks, be sure to check your skin from head to toe when you get home. A tick will look like a brown or black 1/4” ball sitting on the skin. Smother the tick with Vaseline for a few minutes, then pull it out slowly and gently with tweezers. It’s important to take the tick to your doctor for evaluation as to whether it is a deer tick or not. Remember, tick bites may not leave a rash at all while mosquito bites will obviously be very itchy. If you have any skin care related questions, leave me a comment and I will try to answer one each week!
