Skin Tip of the Week: Face Cream that Protects Your Skin

Q: What can you tell me about face creams? Is there an affordable one you recommend?

A: The science and technology of skin care and cosmetics has advanced significantly in the last few years.  All major companies such as Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, and AVON pour money into research to continue to invent new ingredients and products to keep the skin healthy and radiant.  It can be very confusing searching the skin care aisles of the drug store... There are literally hundreds of products available.  Here are my suggestions:

1. To keep the skin moist and radiant, especially in the winter,  I  use Avon's Derma-Full topical hyalluronic acid.  It's the same ingredient that I use in my office to get rid of wrinkles only this product is a topical serum.  I put it on in the morning and at night.  If you have really oily skin you may want to skip this step.

2. Daytime products are to PROTECT your skin from sun and environmental factors.
I love the Neutrogena foundation with SPF 20.  It comes in a number of tints from the lightest to darkest of complexions.  They have a foundation with salicylic acid which keeps the pores from getting clogged.  If you don't have an acne problem and you want to improve the health of your skin they have a foundation that includes retinol.

3.  Night time products are used to REPAIR your skin.  Retinol is an ingredient that helps repair and rebuild the skin.  ROC and Neutrogena make good night time products with retinol.

4.  To cleanse, rebuild and restore tone and texture of the skin, AVONS ANEW retexturizing peel contains 10% glycolic acid.....keeping your skin young and fresh.  You can use these once a day.

5. If you are concerned about the skin around your eyes...Avon has an Anew clinical eye lift which is fantastic for moisturizing and protection day and night.

6.  Antioxidants are ingredients that protect the skin from damage that causes wrinkles.  Oil of Olay Regenerist, and Aveeno with green tea are both great products with antioxidants.

In summary, protect your skin during the day with a sunscreen and restore the skin at night with a retinol, antioxidant or glycolic acid.
